Description

Plowed is a gritty, taboo-focused novel set in a rural Japanese village, where Red, a crude young man raised in the city, arrives to spend a week helping his grandparents on their farm. His grandfather, Hiroshi, is an elderly farmer whose poor hearing, weak eyesight, and oblivious nature leave him largely unaware of what unfolds around him. While Hiroshi assigns Red work in the fields, the visit takes a darker turn within the household. At the center of the story is Yuko, Red’s shy grandmother, a housewife who has experienced little intimacy in her marriage. Over the following days, Red’s inappropriate advances develop into an incestuous affair as he exploits her inexperience and Hiroshi’s lack of awareness. Against the backdrop of everyday farm duties, Plowed explores manipulation, crossed family boundaries, and the increasingly troubling consequences of Red’s behavior.
