Description

In A Cell Phone That Won’t Connect, Yu Takahashi and Nanako Ukai share a happiness that seems untouched by doubt—until they decide to get married. Yu has always had one concern about his fiancée: she loves drinking, but has almost no tolerance for alcohol. When she gets drunk, she blacks out completely, remembering nothing afterward. Aware of the danger, the couple take every precaution, while their college friends keep a close eye on Nanako at parties to ensure nothing goes wrong. Some time after their engagement, an anonymous letter shatters Yu’s peace of mind. Its writer claims that Nanako is being given alcohol and taken advantage of behind his back. More troubling still, the letter alleges that she has recently begun pretending to be drunk so she can willingly enjoy encounters with other men. It ends with a cruel question: knowing this, does he still intend to marry her? Yu initially tries to dismiss the accusation as absurd, but a few uneasy memories begin to resurface. What once seemed unthinkable becomes a possibility he cannot put aside, leaving him caught between his trust in Nanako and the suspicion planted by a stranger. A sensual story of love unraveling under the weight of uncertainty, A Cell Phone That Won’t Connect follows a man and woman whose feelings for each other lead them irrevocably astray.
