Description

In Racing Toward Death, creativity becomes an expression of life even as thoughts of death loom close. Katsuro, an unremarkable host working in the nightlife industry, meets Shiki Machiyuki, a divorced woman around her thirties struggling with desperation and self-doubt. As a relationship develops between them, he discovers that she is also Saison, an anime writer whose work is causing a stir around the world. Recognizing Shiki’s artistic talent draws Katsuro into the world of creativity. Yet behind her international reputation is a woman living with depression, and their work together repeatedly brings both of them face-to-face with thoughts of death. Artistic ambition offers no easy escape from the difficulties they carry into their relationship. With conflicting views and a strained bond, Katsuro and Shiki attempt to confront the demands of creating art on the industry’s front lines. Their story explores the tension between creative expression and personal despair, placing the life-affirming power of an artist’s work alongside the struggles of the people who make it.
