Description

In A Cell Phone That Won’t Connect, Yu Takahashi and Nanako Ukai share a happy relationship, seemingly untouched by doubt—until they decide to get married. Yu’s only lingering concern is his fiancée’s inability to handle alcohol. Nanako loves drinking despite her low tolerance, and when she gets drunk, she blacks out completely, remembering nothing afterward. Aware of the danger, the couple take precautions, while their college friends keep a watchful eye on her at parties to ensure nothing goes wrong. Some time after their engagement, an anonymous letter shatters Yu’s peace of mind. Its writer claims that Nanako is cheating on him, alleging that other men have been plying her with drinks and taking advantage of her. More disturbingly, the letter insists that she has begun pretending to be drunk so she can willingly enjoy their company. It ends with a cruel question: does Yu still intend to marry her? At first, Yu tries to dismiss the accusations as absurd. Yet as he looks back, a few uncomfortable memories begin to cast doubt on what he thought he knew. Caught between trust in Nanako and the possibility of betrayal, he struggles to silence his growing suspicions. A Cell Phone That Won’t Connect tells a sensual, unsettling story of a man and woman whose love for each other leads them irrevocably astray.
