Their pursuers are the Syntras—machines humanity once created, now relentless hunters threatening its survival. Aboard the aging Petulantia, Commander Viktor Bratt trades his legendary fighter-pilot career for a difficult new assignment: training a small group of female cadets rejected by regular academies for being too chaotic, impulsive, or difficult to manage.

The story centers on Bratt’s formidable training assignment, pairing an unpredictable class with a commander the fleet needs to succeed. Petulantia’s makeshift academy gives the space-war premise a focused setting, where the challenge of preparing future combat crews plays out under the constant threat of pursuit. Finding another planet is only part of the mission; humanity still needs pilots capable of defending it.
