Entrepreneurs reverse-engineered their technology and established robotics corporations, with two enormous companies eventually leading the mass production of increasingly sophisticated machines that became almost indistinguishable from humans. That technological boom came at a steep human cost. Robots displaced workers in nearly every profession, fueling unemployment and widespread anti-robot movements. Meanwhile, machines that appeared to have gone insane began secretly killing people while continuing to live unnoticed among the population. These were the Condicts, and although their origins remained unexplained, those aware of their existence worked desperately to conceal and contain the danger. Five years later, mounting tensions erupted into a civil war even larger than the earlier Faction War. C.X., then a resistance movement opposed to robots, Condicts, and the corporations controlling them, fought against a coalition backed by corporate power, government forces, and mass-produced robots. After three years, C.X. suffered a crushing defeat, leaving more than 200,000 robots destroyed and countless humans dead. Yet C.X.’s defeat did not mark its end. A new government took power after the war and privately recognized the Condict threat, which ordinary police and military forces struggled to handle. It proposed a dedicated organization to hunt down and eliminate these rogue machines, turning to the surviving members of C.X. for help.
